Multi Partition a USB Flash Drive in Windows

These days USB drives with large capacity are available in the market. When you connect a USB drive to your system, it gets detected only as a single disk or partition. If you want to create multiple partitions to utilize the USB disk space more appropriately, you will not be able to do that. This would be because Windows detects the USB drive as a removable drive and henceforth, does not allow it to have more than one partition. However, there is still a work around that let’s you create multiple partitions on the USB drive.

A tool named, Lexar USB Format, flips the Removable Media Bit (RMB) of the USB drive so that Windows can recognize it as a fixed drive. You would need to download this tool to create partitions. After you download, run the executable and then click the Flip Removable Bit button after selecting the USB drive. You would then need to remove the USB drive and then plug it in once again. Now, check the USB drive properties and you should see it as a fixed drive, rather than the removable drive.

Bredolab botnet, known for spam runs and identity-theft related attacks, has released a new malware that tricks you into downloading a piece of malware onto the system. Once the malware is released onto your system, it will take full control of your system and then steal information. Along with this, it is bound to send heavy spam e-mails.
Bredolab botnet sends an email using a spoofed email account, support@facebook.com. The email contains a zipped attachment. The message states that you should download the attachment and open it for getting the new password. Here is what the message states:

Well, if I get a message like this, I would freak out too and download the attachment to get the new password. However, as you are reading this post, you know that it is safe to simply ignore and delete this email. Be aware of such emails and simply ignore them.

Alt + Tab in Windows 7

Whenever you need to switch between the open windows, you need to press the Alt + Tab. This allowed you to switch between open windows. Windows 7 also supports this particular feature but in a little different way. The window that appears when you press Alt + Tab in Windows 7 is like this:

However, Windows 7 also has another way of alternating between windows. To use the alternate way, you would need to press the Windows Key + Tab. When you press both these keys, just like you used to press Alt + Tab, you will get a different way to alternate between windows like shown in the graphic below:

To switch to a specific window, you would need to keep alternating between the windows till your desired window is in front. When it is, then release the key and you would simply have that window as active window. The behavior of the Windows Key + Tab key is same as the Alt + Tab key but the only difference is how the open windows appear on your screen.

Microsoft has just released a public beta of their new antivirus program named as Microsoft Security Essentials. As Microsoft states that it provides protection against virus, spyware, worms, and so on. It is designed for real time protection of your PC.

Panda Cloud Antivirus is currently in beta phase and it seems to be getting a good response from the users. It is lightweight, fast, and seems to be reliable enough to be installed on a system. The best thing about Panda Cloud Antivirus is that it is free and does not cost a penny. Something that is free and reliable, it definitely becomes a point of attraction to the users. Therefore, it is now installed on my system.
I tried it out by putting a number of infected files on my system. Panda did a good job in searching and deleting these files. The only issue was that these deleted files were not recoverable. If the files are in suspicion, then the files are kept in the quarantine. You can view these files by clicking the arrow in the bottom right hand corner of the Panda Cloud Antivirus. The graphic below has the arrow highlighted.

Panda works by connecting to the main antivirus server and fetches the latest definitions for scanning directly from the server. Now, the question is what if you are not connected to the server. No worries. There is a Cache directory that is created in the Panda installation directory. The latest definitions are cached in this directory. When you are not connected to the Internet, the cached definitions are used for scanning the system. The benefit is that the user does not have to manually download the definitions on weekly basis and update the antivirus.

The latest buzz word of the IT industry is virtualization. Everyone seems to be rushing in implementing virtualization in their data center. However, without having an appropriate understanding, you may end up loosing more than gaining. Therefore, it is necessary that you understand why virtualization should happen in your data center.

There are two ways in which you can look at virtualization: first one is simply from the test and R&D perspective and second is from the business perspective. Virtualization provides benefits in both ways, but it is the later in which virtualization can provide huge benefits.

Virtualization, if implemented appropriately, can provide huge benefits, directly ranging from saving floor space to huge power costs. When you refer to Adaptive Infrastructure, which provides the flexibility of scaling down or scaling up of a data center, virtualization is one of the key enablers along with other enablers such as automation.

How does virtualization, as an Adaptive Infrastructure enabler, help an organization? This is one of the key question that every CIO wants to ask. Small Business Server 2008 and "Applying Computer Settings" message

Over the weekend, I installed and configured Small Business Server 2008 in my lab. Installation was fairly easy and went pretty smooth. Had no problems what so ever. After it got installed, I made a few changes and then applied Windows Update. It needed a reboot, which I did. That is when the problem started. After I rebooted the server, it would get hanged at "Applying Computer Settings" screen and won't proceed any further. I left it there for a while (about two hours) and it did not proceed any further...I rebooted the server (had to hard boot it) and then went into the Safe Mode to see if things are fine and working. In the Safe Mode, no problem occured.
I again let it reboot into its normal session but results weren't any better. Heck...what to do...so, I went back into the Safe Mode after hard booting it and then checked its network properties...I remembered that I had unchecked IPv6 option...it was pretty strange and I didn't really think that the problem could be due to this. I just checked it again and let the server reboot...within minutes, I was able to login... It seems that the problem occurs because IPv6 is supposed to be SBS2008's primary protocol...due to which it gets stuck on the "Applying Computer Settings" screen.
Nevertheless, this "accidental" solution worked and server is back in its normal condition. If you face the same situation, do make sure IPv6 is selected in the network card properties. Hopefully, this solution will work you as well...it did for me!

Windows 7 and Google Chrome

I installed Google Chrome (32-bit), version 1.0.154.48, on Windows 7 build 7000. Installation went on pretty much fine with any issue. However, there are a number of issues that cropped up when I started browsing through a number of Web sites.
Issue 1:
The bookmarks and most viewed sites were blank. So, doing some research on the Internet, I finally managed to fix this issue by adding --in-process-plugins in the Target section of the Shortcut tab in Google Chrome Properties. You would find the following in Target section: C:\Users\user\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe. Just add --in-process-plugins at the end. However, this solution works but not completely. A few times, it did work and strange enough, I would still find bookmarks and most viewed sites blank. In the Google Support Forum (www.google.com/support/forum/p/Chrome/thread?tid=5111f112bcd233e1&hl=en ), Google guys stated that they currently do not support Windows 7. Fair enough, but soon, Google will have to work out a solution for this.

Issue 2:
Google Chrome did not work properly with a few Web sites that I browse on daily basis. One of the Web sites, I usually run an e-learning course in one of the pop-up windows. On Windows XP with IE 7 or Google Chrome, it did work fine but with Google Chrome on Windows 7, the pop-up window started to hang, causing the parent window in the background to hang as well. I had multiple tabs opened. Even though I could click on the tabs, but could not perform any action on the Web pages, not even scroll. I had to shut down Google Chrome and then restart it. For once, it would have been not a problem, but Google Chrome gave repeat performances... It was pretty disturbing.

Remaining, so far so good! Windows 7 is good and working well.

It is always good to have a computer with the configuration that is latest in the market. However, the computer configuration will not help much if you cannot manage what you have on the computer. I am referring to the information that you would store on the harddisk of your computer. Back in the old days when the hard disk was smaller, for example 2 GB, we would be able to fit everything on the hard drive. Today, when the harddisks are available in 250 GB plus, we still find difficult to fit all information on them. Ofcourse, the difference is in the nature of the information that is available today as compared to the information in the old days, but one major difference is that we often do not manage the information the way we should. For your computer to stay healthy, you must keep what is essential and get rid of the remaining.

Optimizing your computer is essential for the health of your computer. You manage it well, it will run well and behave well. If you do not manage it well, then you will have a few challenges thrown right at your face. Typically, an end user expects that computer is intelligent enough to manage things by itself, but we know this is not the case. Here are a few tips that can help you manage information on your computer - just to ensure that your computer behaves well:

Get rid of files that are not required. Just delete them or move them out of your computer by burning a CD (only if you think that you may require them later)
Backup files that are important to you. Harddisks are highly prone to damage due to multiple factors, such as virus. Backing up files is important but more important is that you do timely backups. Old and outdated backups do not help.
Clean out temporary files. It is important for keeping your computer in good health. Too many temporary files will slow down your computer.
Ensure you have an antivirus but always make sure you have an update installed. Almost all antivirus companies have weekly antivirus updates. A few good antivirus brands are McAfee and eTrust. I have used both and they are really good.
Clean out Temporary Internet files. Almost all Web browsers have built-in functionality to clean out such files.

There are a number of utilities that are available in the market that help you do all of these tasks. If you want a utility that you can pay for, then TuneUp Utilities is a good bet. If you want something that is free but good, then go for Advanced SystemCare. It is extremely good with limited features. MCTS: Exchange Server 2007 (70-236) -- Cleared

Finallly, long wait was over when I clicked on the End Test button on the 70-236 exam. I got 868 out of 1000, which certainly is not bad. This exam is not easy and needs a lots of hands on practice and you need to know a bit of stuff on managing Exchange Server 2007. There were a few key areas where this exam focused:

Knowing the cmdlets and their importance
Knowing PowerShell
Knowing the importance of five different server roles
Knowing how to migrate a role from one server to another server
Most importantly, there were quiet a few questions on restoring a particular server role. If you have not paid attention to this focus area, you might want to do this before going for exam.

I believe I missed out on the importance of backing up and then restoring to another server. A few questions also targetted on moving Exchange databases from Exchange Server 2003 to Exchange Server 2007. Luckily, I passed this exam with bit of hands on.

I have two more exams on Exchange lined up in September and am seriously trying to find some time to study for these exams. In any case, tomorrow is a big day! I am appearing for another exam...MCTS: Office Project 2007. Wish me luck!!!

Movie: Singh is Kinng

A complete entertainer is what I would call it. Not a single character in this movie seemed to be out of place. Forget the story...it has been repeated in so many Bollywood movies but who cares. When you start watching, you are not paying attention to the storyline but to the funny one liners that are thrown at you. So far, the best release of 2008 in Bollywood. Akshay Kumar along with the complete cast is simply brilliant. Everyone does justice to their roles...whether small or big.
Katrina and Neha both are good. Katrina surely needs to improve the dialog delivery...otherwise, she looks good. Neha, this is the first time I have seen her is a comic role, does an excellent job.
Yashpal Sharma: probably one of the best roles that he has played till date. He was too good in the "tragedy king" role.
Om Puri: Good job once again.
Ranveer: Should have gotten a better bite...he is probably the only character I did not like in this movie. Not that the Ranveer did not do a good job, but I feel that the character was not meant for someone as talented as Ranveer.
Folks, if you want a complete family entertainer, go and watch this movie. It is definitely worth the time and money. Hope you enjoy the show.

Movie: The Dark Knight

Just watched The Dark Knight last night. I would still prefer the older batman movies over this one. Christian Bale, as Batman, did not impress at all. Heath Ledger, in his Joker role, was much more impressive. This is the first time, I actually liked the Joker role...a Joker who is playing a mind game with the Batman. Here is how I would rate the movie:
Technically: 10/10
Cinematography: 9/10
Acting: 8/10 (Joker: 10/10)
Overall, do watch it at least once...it is still worth watching! You will enjoy the Joker's tag lines "Why are you so serious..."

Installing Server Core

Server Core is a new feature of Windows Server 2008 that allows you to run the basic shell without adding additional services. Server Core installation is always a new installation and therefore, no upgrade is possible from the previous version of Windows Server. When you perform the new installation, you are also required to create a new partition.Server Core offers the following key features:
Limited GUI functionality
All native Windows API code
Limited MSI support in unattended mode
Server Core offers certain benefits, such as ease of management, reduced risks of attack, and less need for maintenance.When you install Windows Server 2008 Core, you get only a limited set of binaries that are required to run Windows Server 2008. There are several features and tools that are NOT installed when you install Windows Server 2008 as a core installation. Some of these features and tools are:
Desktop shell
Windows Explorer
.NET Framework or CLR (which means no support for managed code and Power Shell)
Microsoft Management Console or snap-ins
Control Panel applets (with a few small exceptions)
Internet Explorer
Help and Support
Run dialog box
Some of the features that are mandatory and are installed when you install Windows Server 2008 Core are:
Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL)
Device drivers
Core subsystems
Event logs on the command-line
Performance counters
Licensing service
Notepad
When you initiate the installation, you are prompted to select either one of these two options as shown in Figure 1:
Full Installation: Installs the complete Windows Server 2008 operating system with some level of customization.

After you select Server Core as the installation option, you move to the next screen to accept the license agreement, as shown in Figure 2.

Next, you need to select the installation type, as shown in Figure 3. Note that the Upgrade option is disabled and the only option you have is to install a fresh copy of Server Core by clicking the Custom option.

On the next screen, you select the disk where you want to install Server Core, as shown in Figure 4.

Installation starts when you move to the next screen. Figure 5 displays the installation progress.

When the installation is complete, system is rebooted for the operating system to start. You are prompted to press CTRL + ALT + DELETE keys to log on, as shown in Figure 6.

After you log on to Server Core, the desktop displays only the command shell, as shown in Figure 7.

After you have completed the installation, you can configure up to five server roles:

Active DirectoryYou need to use the start /w ocsetup command to set up one or more of the above mentioned server roles. For the complete syntax details, you can run the start /w ocsetup command. Figure 8 displays the Windows Optional Component Setup dialog box that is displayed when you enter this command.If you set up Server Core as a domain controller, you will not be able to run the dcpromo command at the command prompt. However, you can run this command by using the unattended.txt file.

Lotus Domino Server: LDAP Server: Listener failure

Try installing Lotus Domino server on a server that is a Active Directory domain controller. Not that I would recommend it - I was just curious how Lotus Domino server would behave when there is already an AD and Lotus Domino runs its own LDAP server. So, I installed and got the expected results. I started getting a series of an error:

A simple reason is that AD also uses the same port and when Lotus Domino detects these ports being used, then it starts throwing errors in the server console and logs these errors in the log.nsf file. You can view these errors using Lotus Domino Administrator.
There are a number of ports that Active Directory uses for replication using RPC and 389 is one of the ports that is used. The port 389/tcp is used for Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) and port 389/udp is used for LDAP ping. MOSS Portal

I am partly working on my new MOSS portal. I have so far been able to create the basic architecture and now working on defining the permissions on this portal. Soon, I should be rolling out this portal and creating a link to this blog.

I have not tried hard but have not been able to figure out how to allow anonymous permissions on the portal so that everyone can view and write on my blog portal...is it that I would have to stop SSO service for my account or is there any other way to get this working! I have finally managed to get my hands on Microsoft Sharepoint Products and Technologies Resource Kit book (yes, the hard copy of this book!!!). Thanks to my friend Harish Tomar for providing this book to me!

Certified Lotus Expert

I worked on Lotus Domino server 4.5 and 5.0 long time back and had a wish that I would be able to certify myself on this product. Well, the year 2008 started with a good node. I got to work on Lotus Domino server 8.0 and had the chance to certify myself. I went through certification exams and passed all of them. So far, in last four months, I have been able to clear 190-847, 848, 849, 840, 835, and 836.

First, I targeted for the administration exams, which were 847, 848, 849, and 840. Then, we had an internal requirement in our company for someone to do a bit of programming on this product. I thought of going ahead and doing it myself. I have always tend to stay away from programming but Lotus Domino is bit different. I geared up for the first exam and did manage to clear with 83%. Then, I studied a bit more and developed a few demos and went for the second exam, 836 and cleared it with more than 90% score. Overall, the questions in both the exams were pretty easy...if you have studied the help file in detail. Well, that is what I did. I went through the help file and understood the concepts, tried them on the application and here you go...I pass both the exams. My first achievement in programming. I regret skipping the fundamentals exam, which is 190-834. I don't get the certification on development if I don't clear this exam. I am going to go and clear it up in a fortnight.

Now, the exams, specifically, the administration exams, are pretty easy. If you have been doing administration for a few years and know what you have been doing, then I don't think it would be hard for you to clear these exams. Some of the questions are pretty straight forward and don't require you to think hard. Some of the questions do overlap in each exam, which means that the same question appears in multiple exams in administration. I found it weird because the same question that is being asked in fundamentals exam is also being asked in the intermediate exam. Nevertheless, I enjoyed taking these exams and finally, got certified.

Microsoft has just announced the release of their first beta of Internet Explorer 8. Two new features that Microsoft incorporated into IE8 are Activities and Web Slices. The same article is also available on Microsoft TechNet.This article mainly describes the difference between direct download of SP1 vs. download using Windows Update. There are ofcourse the size differences: SP1 x86 edition download from Windows Update is just about 65 MB and SP1 x64 edition download is 125 MB. Whereas, if you download it from Microsoft Download Center, the sizes are nearly 450 MB and 745 MB.
If you need to update a single machine, then it is better to use Windows Update, which will help you download appropriate updates for the drivers etc. However, if you want to deploy it on multiple machines using a third party tool, then it would be better to download it from the Microsoft Download Center and deploy.Alternatively, you can use Microsoft Windows Software Update Service (WSUS) to fetch the SP1 from the Windows Update Site and deploy it on multiple computers. It is better because the download size is small and you, ofcourse, download it only once.
